Gilles Decan is a postdoctoral researcher in the transport technology research group of Sebastian Verhelst (UGent). His main focus is the use of renewable fuels in internal combustion engines, as a way of reaching renewable transportation.
Gilles finished his PhD in the summer of 2020 on the development of a numerical framework for simulating dual-fuel medium-speed maritime engines. This technology provides a cost-efficient way of retrofitting current diesel engines to dual-fuel operation, thereby allowing the introduction of renewable fuels into the fleet. In that perspective, Gilles will continue investigating this technology, its ability to use e-fuels and the impact on the Belgian transport and energy sectors during the BEST project.
